What does Apgar score mean?

The Apgar score is a figure for newborns

It is a test consisting of 5 small tests that each get a digit of 0, 1 or 2. The numbers added is the final score. It gives an impression of the overall of a newborn baby. The test is done three times: 1 minute after birth, five minutes after birth and the last is after 10 minutes.

The 5 points that are checked are:

  • Skin color (appearance)
  • Wrist and heart rate (pulse)
  • Reaction to incentives (grimace)
  • Muscle tension (activity)
  • Respiration (respiration)

Generally, most babies score between 7 and 10 points, when less than 4 is scored, immediate help is required. However, it is only a tool to be able to estimate the situation easily and quickly. The score owes its name to the creator of the test: Virginia Apgar.
