What does antagonist mean?

Antagonist means opponent

An antagonist is the opposite of something: the cold is the antagonist of the hot. The term is mainly used in the film, Book and Theatre World: The antagonist is the opponent of the protagonist. An antagonist is not necessarily the villain, but in literature that is often the case (because the good usually overcomes).
