What does DVR mean?

DVR means Digital VCR

A DVR is a device that has the ability to store broadcasts on a hard disk. This is sometimes a separate device but often also a functionality of a satellite receiver or digital decoder. A DVR is also often called a PVR (Personal Video Recorder), depending on the manufacturer/supplier. The capabilities of the DVR/PVR depend on the software used, but globally it can be compared to a VCR. Most of them also have the possibility to look back with delay (this means that you can watch while still being recorded). The more extensive versions also have access to the EPG, or the automatic skipping of advertisements.

What does EPG mean?

EPG means Electronic program Guide

With an EPG it is possible to display data about programs (time, small summary, main players, etc) on the screen. EPG is often offered to people who receive digital television. Ultimately, it is a piece of software that retrieves and displays information. The software ultimately determines what information is visible, in combination with a DVR is also possible to quickly and easily (press the button) the DVR to set the program to automatically record. The advantage is that EPG is realtime, last minute changes can be taken as a result (unlike a classic TV guide that is printed weeks in advance). Read More
