He got his training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, obtaining a Master of Arts in Classical Acting. He has performed in several theatre plays and in 2015 he played Hamlet in a sold-out run at the Barbican Theatre, London.

Benedict Cumberbatch starred in several television series before playing Stephen Hawking in the television film Hawking in 2004. His major breakthrough came when he in 2010 starred as Sherlock Holmes in the hugely popular BBC series Sherlock.
