A doula comes from ancient Greece, and means as much as ' serving woman '. In North America/Canada The word has been given a different meaning and it is an experienced and skilled woman who supports pregnant women (and partner) during pregnancy, at birth and some time afterwards. During childbirth, the doula will be present all the time. A doula is not a doctor, nurse, midwife or maternity nurse, the doula is a person who can assist the (Barend) woman and offer companionship in the difficult time of the birth.
