An abscess is a swelling with pus
An abscess can occur anywhere in your body: your mouth, groin, abdomen, anus, etc. In the base there are two types of abscesses: a cold abscess and a hot abscess. A cold abscess is blue-red in color and is caused by tuberculosis, and is a very rare type of abscess. A warm abscess is a subcutaneous accumulation of pus, usually surrounded by a red coloured area. Warm abscesses are common to the gums and throats. An abscess arises after tissue is infected by a bacterium, parasite or body foreign substance. The immune system then sends out white blood cells in the area to clean up the cases: a pus-filled swelling can occur. An abscess often entails the following symptoms:
- Swelling, pain and warmth on the spot of the abscess;
- Fever
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Overall feeling of illness.
The pressure in an abscess eventually becomes so large that it finally breaks, an abscess does not heal as long as the pus has not been able to drain.
