A Granny square is a classic among crochet patterns and is popular by simplicity but with many possibilities. A granny square is to do with all possible stitches and is often the basis for many crochet work. The 1st mention of the Granny Square comes from 1897 but Waarschijnijk is used for much longer. By attaching the small squares to each other you can make small things like a coaster, but also a large dispersion.
