What does HSMR mean?

HSMR means Hospital Standardized mortality Ratio

The HSMR sets the actual mortality rate in a hospital against the mortality expected (based on the patient's characteristics). It is an indicator to be able to compare hospital mortality rates. The HSMR was developed in England and based on 50 diagnostic groups that cause approximately 80% of hospital mortality. The Dutch HSMR model is made from 2011 by CBS. Often criticism is made of the HSMR because not every hospital administreerd the data as carefully, and for an indicator like the HSMR often different requirements for internal use than for external use are made.
