Side note means small critical remark
Originally a side drawing was a (handwritten) remark, or some other form of commentary, which was made in the side line of a book. Nowadays, it is more figuratively used: it is no longer in the side, but it is a general remark. If you put some comments on it, you are somewhat critical of the subject.
